What happens if, by their actions, they cause others, even children,
to follow their example ?

We are opposed to his ideas of shutting someone out. Ignoring someone goes against the teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ, who taught:

If he listens to you, you have won over your brother.If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses. HE came to bring the debate.
Don't run away from it.
